The one thing most people tell you before coming to law school is that you will not have a life outside of law school. For the most part… this is true. Law school is known for its demanding schedule and rigorous coursework. Nonetheless, we must also learn how to have a healthy work-life balance.
Vacationing during law school might seem unattainable, but taking a break is beneficial. A vacation provides a much-needed break from the constant pressure and allows you to recharge mentally and emotionally. I'm sorry, 1Ls, this may seem hypocritical or contradicting, but this article isn't for you. However, there are plenty of things to do locally that will help you briefly escape the rigors of law school.
My first vacation in law school was during my spring semester of 1L year. My family and I decided to go to Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, for spring break. It was truly amazing! Before this vacation, like most people in law school, I was feeling overwhelmed. This vacation allowed me to recharge and return to my studies with renewed motivation and focus.
Vacationing improves your academic performance; it reminds you there is more to life than casebooks and exams and provides invaluable networking opportunities. I have met numerous attorneys from all over the United States who have given me advice and even offered employment opportunities if I ever decide to leave Mississippi.
I have taken at least one vacation a semester. Planning in advance and allocating time to do your assignments and study is essential. The vacation should not interfere with your academic progress. I also let my very understanding job know that I check my email and other office correspondence, and if they need anything, I'm available to assist. I have never missed a day of class or gotten behind on my assignments due to vacationing. With some good planning and discipline, you, too, can go on vacations while in law school.
